General Report for October 2024

During this year, our association has continued to grow. New dance teams have joined, one after another. The number of members is also increasing. These achievements cannot be separated from the hard work and selfless dedication of our two presidents. Especially our eldest sister, President Ge. She is an outstanding, strong woman. She speaks multiple languages. She is willing to help others. She is boldly willing to explore. This issue will tell the story of our association.

In Sydney, Australia, there is a well-known local Multicultural Seniors Association for middle aged and the elderly of various ethnic groups and the Australian Russian-Chinese Friendship Association. The current president is a 74-year-old lady of Chinese and Russian descent, whose Chinese name is Ge Yinglan. Over the years, the two associations of ethnic integration and Chinese and Russian friendships established by Ge Yinglan have been running well. This should be the first, or the only one in Australia.

On May 29, 2012, Ge Yinglan and several other initiators registered a social welfare and charity organization with the Australian government: “Multicultural Seniors Association Inc” of various ethnic groups. Later, they registered and established social organizations: the “Australian Russian-Chinese Friendship Association Inc” and the “Unity of Russian & Chinese Association Inc”. All of these are run under the unified leadership and command of the elderly Ge Yinglan and her team. These middle-aged and elderly people have been carrying out various public welfare and charity activities for 12 years, and have achieved good social benefits. It is known as the home of middle-aged and elderly new immigrants.

Elderly Ge Yinglan was a skater from Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China. In 1984, she immigrated to Sydney Australia with her family. She was diagnosed with kidney cancer during a physical examination in 2004. After being cured, she devoted herself to establishing public welfare and charity, contributing to the middle-aged and elderly immigrants of all ethnic groups, descendants of Chinese and Russian mixed races, and community elderly care services.

In the MSA and elderly people of all ethnic groups, there are members from all over the world, including Chinese, Vietnamese, Russians, Mongolians, Koreans, and other ethnic groups. The MSA has developed rapidly, from a dozen people at the beginning to a few hundred people, and now has more than 3,000 registered members. The MSA and Russian Descendants has more than 80 registered members. According to the rise of Chinese and Russian descendants in Sydney, they established a Australian Russian – Chinese Friendship Association. The scope of friendship of Chinese and Russian descendants has been expanded from Calgary to the entire Greater Sydney area, with more people participating in activities and greater influence.

The three association of all ethnic are under the same personnel. Everyone works together to perform the public welfare and charity needs of multicultural integration, and received many honors and commendations.

The MSA has four permanent departments, namely: Secretary Office, Finance Office, Logistics Office, and Cultural and Art Troupe.

The main service activities of the association are the following three goals: First, serving members. This is mainly to open English learning classes, provide English training for new immigrants, and help them better integrate into Australian social life. There are also social dances to make the lives of middle-aged and elderly people happier, improve physical and mental health, reduce disease, and reduce the government’s financial burden of disease. At the same time, singing classes, dance classes, ethnic art troupes, home-based elderly care and other projects have been launched. They are open to members every day from Monday to Friday.

The second is to accept the government’s commission to manage paid community volunteers to serve home-based elderly care and community work. There are now 30 fixed volunteers. The third is to organize various galas and festivals. They organize members to perform cultural and artistic programs with ethnic characteristics to promote multicultural exchanges and increase the unity of different ethnic groups. In particular, the activities of the descendants of China and Russia have created good communication opportunities for these people who have immigrated to Australia. These activities fully realize the purpose and original intention of their establishment of social organizations. The above three organizations also actively organize donations in social disaster relief, which have been widely praised by the government and society.

Member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, Nick Lach, commented on the MSA: Many elderly people of all ethnic groups in our community have poor health due to lack of English and lack of exercise. The New South Wales Seniors Association has been organizing various activities such as dancing, singing, and monthly outings for the elderly in our district.

Its purpose is to help the elderly from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds live a healthy, independent and happy life. Many national and international studies have shown that elderly’s participation in social activities and various physical exercises will give them a better quality of life. Therefore, the projects and activities of the New South Wales Friendship Association are very popular. In the past year, the number of members of the association has more than doubled. With the aging population, the elderly have more and more demand for this project. MSA also won the “2018 New South Wales Senior Local Achievement Award” awarded by the New South Wales Parliament.
